The arts-integrated, arts-centered, or arts-infused educational experiment that took place nationally under the auspices of the Annenberg Foundation, an effort that included Detroit from 1996 – 2002, resulted in a wide range of effective curricular units that employed the arts to teach the core curriculum. The arts-centered approach was especially successful in engaging students’ multiple ways of learning, particularly at-risk and second language children. The program also gave some exposure to the arts to students unlucky enough to attend school when Detroit’s once heralded arts curriculum had become badly curtailed.

Soon after the program ended, three of the original community organizations involved in arts-infused education program approached Marygrove College about establishing an Institute for Arts-Infused Education.   After a significant planning period, that Institute was founded in 2006 and has been delivering programs in partnership with several organizations in schools ever since.
